October, 2011

The Wolverines earned their second win of the season with a tough hard fought win over the Vincent Massey Vikings.  The Wolverines came into the game as heavy underdogs. The Vikings were 4-1 and in second place in the division, the Wolverines were 1-4 and tied for second last in the division. The Wolverines played their best game of the season, mostly due to the fact that they played well in all three phases of the game; offense, defense, and special teams.

The offense moved the ball behind some hard running by Demidiuk, who finished the day with 160 yards, and Byron who added 41 yards rushing and 35 yards receiving. Josh R did what he does best, and that is catch TDs. Josh has 11 receptions this year, and 6 have gone for touchdowns.

The TSN turning point was in the fourth quarter when West K’s drive was somewhat keep alive by a roughing the kicker penalty. After the penalty, it put the Wolverines in 3rd and 7 on the Vikings 30 yard line. With a bold and decisive call by Wolverine, offensive coordinator, Coach Medwick, the Wolverines went for it. Byron snatched a beautiful pass out of the air and stretched his short-statured frame as far as he could. Fortunately it was enough for the first down. Three runs later by Demidiuk, and the Wolverines were ahead by a score of 14-0. Based on the way the Wolverine defense was playing it all but sealed the deal.

The Wolverine defensive sure came to play, and earned their second shut out of the year. The defense allowed a paltry 182 total yards to the Vikings, they had 2 interceptions, and also turned it over on downs. The biggest play from scrimmage that they allowed was a 30-yard reverse. Other than that the Wolverine defense handled the Viking offense all game. The defense was led with some great play from all 12 of its members. However, Ethan M led the way with 9 tackles, 2 of which were tackles for losses. His efforts earned him defensive player week for the WHSFL. Congratulations Ethan!

The Wolverines have one more regular season game this year on Thursday in Portage. Be sure to wish them luck!

Go Wolverines.
